About Kaydka

A personal journey to preserve and share the stories that connect us to our heritage.

Kaydka was created from a personal journey.

Growing up in the Somali diaspora often means living at a distance from the land, the language, and the everyday presence of our history. Like many others, I carried questions I could not easily answer , about belonging, memory, and what it means to hold on to one's Soomaalinimo when so much is scattered.

Over time, that search became more intentional. I began to look for our stories in books, in forgotten references, in names mentioned but rarely preserved. What I found was not absence, but fragility , knowledge that exists, yet risks being lost if it is not gathered and cared for.

Kaydka is my response to that realization.

This project is a small effort to collect and archive Somali books and literary work, not as artifacts of the past, but as living threads of culture. It is not about completeness or authority, but about continuity , ensuring that what remains can still be found, read, and built upon.

If Kaydka helps even one person reconnect with a story, a language, or a sense of belonging, then it has fulfilled its purpose. My hope is that future generations will not have to search as hard to find themselves in the words of those who came before them.
